Named after the Michelbeuern quarter and the AKH, Vienna’s general hospital.
Michelbeuern recalls the Benedictine abbey of Michaelbeuern near Salzburg, whose estates here are already mentioned in 1072. The name Michelbeuerngrund was used to avoid confusion with the neighbouring Alsergrund. The Allgemeines Krankenhaus (general hospital) opened under Joseph II on 16 August 1784; its new building now covers most of Michelbeuern. The station added the hospital to its name in 1987.
