‘Nußdorf’ probably means ‘nut village’.
The former village, first recorded around 1114, probably owes its name to the many nut trees that grew there. Wine-growing made its people prosperous, and its brewery, founded in 1819, and the Danube steamers made it a popular excursion spot for the Viennese. It became part of Vienna in 1890/1892.
