Named after Field Marshal Joseph Wenzel Radetzky.
Johann Joseph Wenzel Count Radetzky (1766–1858) served in the Austrian army for decades; as chief of staff he drew up the campaign plan for the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. In 1848/1849 he put down the Italian national revolution and remained governor-general of northern Italy until 1857. The square was named after him in 1876.
