Named after Taubstummengasse, the street of the institute for deaf people.
The lane, first mentioned in 1816, takes its name from the Taubstummeninstitut, the institute for deaf people. Joseph II founded it in 1779 after seeing the Abbé de l’Épée’s school in Paris. In 1808 the government bought a house on the Wieden for it, right next to the Theresianum; the institute has since moved away.
