Named after Thaliastraße, which recalls the Thalia-Theater, a vanished summer theatre.
The Thalia-Theater, named after Thalia, the Greek muse of comedy, opened in 1856 as a wooden summer theatre with a glass roof and stood until 1870. On 28 August 1857 Richard Wagner’s ‘Tannhäuser’ was performed in Vienna for the first time there. The street, until then Lerchenfelder Straße, took the theatre’s name in 1883; the Ottakring section followed in 1894.
