Named after Alt-Marzahn, the core of the medieval village of Marzahn.
The name Marzahn comes from the Slavic ‘marcana’ (Polabian for ‘swamp’), meaning a settlement by marshland. The old village street, first called Dorfaue (‘village green’), received its present name in 1938. Its lens-shaped layout still marks the medieval village core, and the whole ensemble with its village church has been protected since 1977.
