Named after Bayerischer Platz (‘Bavarian Square’), the heart of the Bayerisches Viertel.
Shown as ‘Platz Y’ on the first plans, the square was named after the then Kingdom of Bavaria and became the centre of a whole quarter with Bavarian street names; the spelling ‘Bayrischer’ became ‘Bayerischer’ in 1909. Many residents were Jewish and were driven out and murdered in the Nazi era; since 1993 the ‘Orte des Erinnerns’ (places of remembrance) around the square recall them.
