Named after Schloss Bellevue, the official residence of the German Federal President.
‘Bellevue’ is French for ‘beautiful view’. The palace, built in 1785/1786 as a summer residence for the Prussian Prince August Ferdinand, owed its name to the view west across the park and the winding Spree to the dome of Schloss Charlottenburg. In January 1994 President Richard von Weizsäcker moved the head of state’s main official seat here from Bonn.
