Named after the Großer Tiergarten, once the electors' hunting park.
‘Tiergarten’ means animal garden. The first one was laid out in 1527 near the Berlin palace and later extended westwards: wild animals were released and fenced in, and the area served as the hunting park of the Electors of Brandenburg. In 1742 Frederick the Great had the fences torn down and the park redesigned for the public. The station opened in 1885 as ‘Thiergarten’.
