Named after Bundesplatz, renamed in 1950 to show that Berlin belonged to the Federal Republic.
The square was laid out in 1875 as Straßburger Platz and renamed Kaiserplatz in 1888 after Kaiser Wilhelm I, who had died a week earlier. In 1950 it became Bundesplatz (‘federal square’) as a sign that Berlin belonged to the Bundesrepublik, at the same time as the Kaiserallee became the Bundesallee. The S-Bahn station, formerly called Wilmersdorf, took the same name when it reopened in 1993.
