Named after the Grunewald, a forest named after a hunting lodge.
In 1542 a hunting lodge called Zum grünen Wald, ‘at the green forest’, was built for Elector Joachim II; it gave its name to the whole forest. The station opened in 1879 as Hundekehle and became Grunewald in 1884. From October 1941, many deportation trains took Berlin’s Jews from here; several memorials recall them.
