Named after Gunther, a figure of the Nibelungenlied.
In the Nibelungenlied, the medieval German epic, Gunther is a king of the Burgundians. The street was named in 1900 and was first spelt Güntherstraße. Many streets around it are also named after figures of the Nibelung saga, such as Siegfried, Hagen and Kriemhild.
