Named after Güntzelstraße, which honours Bernhard Güntzel, head of old Wilmersdorf.
Bernhard Güntzel (1833–1892), a retired army engineer officer, headed the then independent municipality of Wilmersdorf from 1886 until his death in 1892 and promoted its urban development. The street was named after him in 1893; the U-Bahn station, under the Bundesallee where it crosses Güntzelstraße, opened in 1971.
