Hackescher Markt

Mitte

Named after the Hackescher Markt, a square laid out by Count von Hacke.

Around 1750 the city commandant, Count Hans Christoph Friedrich von Hacke, had the square laid out for Frederick II on marshy land by the old fortifications. The station opened in 1882 as Börse, after the nearby stock exchange. It was renamed Marx-Engels-Platz in 1951 and Hackescher Markt in 1992.
