Named after Spandauer Straße, the old road to Spandau, and St Mary’s Church.
Spandauer Straße was already a road from Berlin to Spandau in the 13th century; a plan of 1723 is the first to show it entirely under that name. The Marienkirche (St Mary’s Church) was first recorded as a parish church on 3 January 1292; architecture experts date it to around 1270. It is Berlin’s oldest town parish church still used for worship.
