Named after the Volkspark Humboldthain, a park dedicated to Alexander von Humboldt.
Work on the park (Hain = grove) began on 14 September 1869, the 100th birthday of the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, with the foundation stone of a monument to him. Designed by Gustav Meyer, the park could be used from 1872. In Humboldt’s memory, trees from Europe, Asia and North America were planted and labelled.
