‘North station’: the name replaced Stettiner Bahnhof, terminus of the line to Stettin.
The terminus opened in 1842 as the starting point of the Stettin railway, which later took Berliners on holiday to the Pomeranian Baltic coast. After the Second World War Stettin became part of Poland; to avoid any suggestion of territorial claims, the station was renamed Berlin Nordbahnhof on 1 December 1950. Its underground S-Bahn station of 1936 was closed by the Wall from 1961 to 1990.
