Named after Oranienburger Straße, which honours the town of Oranienburg.
The street has existed since about the 13th century, first as the Spandauer Heerweg, the road from Berlin’s Spandau gate to Spandau. With the building of the customs wall the name Oranienburger Straße came into use, but it was only made official on 26 June 1824. The station opened in 1936; from 1961 to 1990 it was a ‘ghost station’ while the Wall stood.
