The name recalls the Oranienburger Tor, a city gate on the road to Oranienburg.
When the customs and excise wall was built in 1734–1736, it was given a gate on the road leading out towards Oranienburg. In 1787–1788 Carl von Gontard replaced it with a gate shaped like a Roman triumphal arch, demolished in 1867 as an obstacle to traffic. The name lives on for the crossroads at the station, which was a ‘ghost station’ from 1961 to 1990.
