Named after Hannover, the capital of Lower Saxony.
The street got its present name in 1891. Before that it was Charitéstraße (from around 1735) and then Communikation am Neuen Thor. In GDR times the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany, West Germany’s mission in East Berlin, stood at numbers 28–30.
