Named after Lichtenrade, whose name is said to mean a clearing made in the forest.
The village was probably founded around 1230 and first recorded in 1375, as Lichtenrode, in the land register of Emperor Charles IV. The name is said to come from 'Lichtenrode', a clearing created by cutting down trees. The railway reached the village in 1883 with a halt on the line to Dresden.
