Named after the southern part of Lichterfelde, once the village of Giesensdorf.
The halt was set up in 1893 to serve a new villa quarter on the land of Giesensdorf. As Giesensdorf and Lichterfelde had already merged to form Groß-Lichterfelde, it was named Groß-Lichterfelde Süd (south); the 'Groß' was dropped in 1925. Lichterfelde itself owes its name to West Flemish 'lichtervelde'.
