Moritzplatz

Kreuzberg

Named after Moritzplatz, which honours Prince Maurice of Orange.

The square was named in 1841 after Moritz (Maurice), Prince of Orange (1567–1625), son of William the Silent, stadtholder of Holland and Zeeland and commander of the Dutch army and navy. It was laid out on the former Köpenicker Feld together with Oranienplatz. Before the Second World War it was one of Kreuzberg’s busiest shopping squares, with a Wertheim department store.
