Named after Heinrich-Heine-Straße, which honours the poet Heinrich Heine.
The station opened in 1928 as Neanderstraße, a street first laid out on the land of the factory owner George Christian Neander (1784–1854). In 1960 East Berlin renamed the street after the poet Heinrich Heine (1797–1856), and the station followed. From 1961 to 1990 it was a closed ‘ghost station’ that West Berlin trains passed without stopping.
