The name recalls the parade ground on the Tempelhofer Feld.
The station opened in 1927 as ‘Flughafen’ (airport). In January 1937 it was renamed after the former parade ground of the Berlin garrison on the neighbouring Tempelhofer Feld, used by the Prussian army from 1722 until spring 1914; the next station north took the name Flughafen. A renaming to Franz-Werfel-Straße was planned in 1946 but never carried out.
