Named after Platz der Luftbrücke, the square that recalls the Berlin Airlift.
‘Luftbrücke’ means air bridge: in 1948–1949, when the Soviet occupying power blocked the land and water routes to the western sectors of Berlin, the Western Allies supplied them by air. The square lies in front of the former Tempelhof Airport. The station opened in 1926 as Kreuzberg, became Flughafen (airport) in 1937 and has had its present name since 1975.
