Named after Augusto César Sandino, the Nicaraguan guerrilla leader.
Augusto César Sandino (1895–1934) led the resistance against the US occupation of Nicaragua. In 1934 he was murdered by Anastasio Somoza García’s National Guard; in 1961 the Sandinista National Liberation Front took his name. The street, previously Lüderitzstraße, was renamed after him in 1984.
