Schönefeld

Named after the municipality of Schönefeld, where Berlin's airport lies.

Schönefeld is first recorded in 1375 as ‘Schonenvelde’. The station served the nearby airport and took its name: from 1962 ‘Zentralflughafen Schönefeld’, from 1976 ‘Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld’, from 2020 ‘Flughafen BER – Terminal 5’. Because it long remained a makeshift, it was popularly known in the GDR as ‘Bahnhof freies Feld’ (station in the open field). Since December 2023 it has been simply Schönefeld (bei Berlin).
