Named after Sonnenallee, which bore a Nazi-era name from 1938 to 1947.
The station opened in 1912 as Kaiser-Friedrich-Straße, after the street named in 1893 in honour of Emperor Friedrich III. Its extension was named Sonnenallee in 1920. In 1938 the whole route was renamed Braunauer Straße, after Hitler’s birthplace, Braunau am Inn, and the station followed in 1939. The Reichsbahn later renamed the station Sonnenallee; the whole street has borne that name since 31 July 1947.
