Named after the Wedding district, which recalls a medieval manor.
The name recalls the estate built here by the nobleman Rudolf de Weddinghe. A document of 1251 mentions a mill at a village called Weddinge; in 1782 Friedrich II founded a colony that was named Wedding because of the nearby estate. Unusually for a German place name, it takes the article: Berliners live ‘auf dem Wedding’ or, today, ‘im Wedding’.
