Named after Reinickendorfer Straße, the road towards the old village of Reinickendorf.
A plan of 1701 already shows the route as the road to Oranienburg; it is named after Reinickendorf, an independent municipality until 1920. Reinickendorf was founded around 1230; its settlers were probably led by a locator called Reginhard – Reinhard for short, Reinicke in Low German. The station opened in 1923 on the North–South line.
