Named after Wittenau, renamed after its village head Peter Witte.
The village used to be called Dalldorf. After Berlin built its municipal asylum there in 1877–1879, ‘Dalldorf’ became popular slang for a madhouse, so in 1903 the residents asked for a new name. It combined Peter Witte (1822–1902), their long-serving local head, with ‘Au’, for the flat land. The Kaiser approved Wittenau on 23 August 1905, and the station, opened in 1877 as Dalldorf, followed in 1906.
