Zehlendorf

Named after Zehlendorf, an old village whose name mixes German and Slavic.

The street village of Zehlendorf arose around 1230 and was first recorded in 1242 as Cedelendorp. Its name is a German-Slavic hybrid containing the Polabian personal name Sedl, which comes from the Old Slavic word sedlo, ‘settlement’. From 1891 the station was called Zehlendorf Mitte; on 1 October 1938 it went back to the name Berlin-Zehlendorf.
