Abbey Wood

Greenwich and Bexley

Named after the woods by Lesnes Abbey.

The abbey was founded in 1178 by Richard de Luci; tradition says he did it in penance for his part in the quarrel that led to the murder of Thomas Becket. It was closed in the 1520s, and its ruins stand in a park near the station.
