Angel

Islington

Named after the Angel, an inn here from the 17th century.

By 1614 an inn here on the Great North Road was known as the Angel, after the Angel of the Annunciation on its sign, and the crossing became known as the Angel. In the early 18th century it was the largest coaching house on Islington High Street. The tube station took its name in 1901.
