Named after a statue of King George IV, and the church of St Pancras.
The area was once called Battle Bridge, after a crossing of the River Fleet. A monument to George IV stood here from about 1830 to 1845; it was unpopular and soon removed. St Pancras was a boy martyred in Rome, by tradition in 304.
