Named after a dark-coloured river wall built along the Thames against floods.
The wall, with its stairs, was built in the Middle Ages on an outside curve of the river, and the area was known as Blackwall by at least the 14th century. The name spread along the water: Blackwall Reach is the stretch of the Thames east of the Isle of Dogs, and Blackwall Point lies across the river in Greenwich.
