Probably named after the le Gant family, stewards of Barking Abbey.
The family served the abbey from the 13th century, and the name Gantesgrave appears in records as early as 1291. Hidden London says the le Gants were medieval landowners who came from the Belgian city of Ghent. Today the name also belongs to the roundabout above the station, where five roads meet.
