Named after Headstone, whose moated manor house was built around 1310.
The settlement was called Hegeton in the early 14th century, probably 'the farmstead enclosed by a hedge'. The manor belonged to the Archbishops of Canterbury until 1546, when it was surrendered to Henry VIII, who soon sold it.
