Highams Park

Waltham Forest

Named after Highams, a mansion built in 1768.

'Higham' means high home or enclosure; a free man called Haldan held the manor in 1066. From 1429 it was called Higham Bensted, once joined with Benstedes, an estate of the Benstede family. The house was built for Anthony Bacon, and Humphry Repton was consulted on its grounds in 1793. The station opened in 1873 as Hale End and became Highams Park in 1894.
