Wood Street

Waltham Forest

Named after Wood Street, an old road near the forest in Walthamstow.

Wood Street is recorded in 1513, on the most easterly of the parish's old north–south routes, which ran close to the forest from Chingford by Hale End to Whipps Cross. We have not found out why it was called Wood Street. It stayed a rural, separate settlement until the mid-19th century.
