Queensway

Westminster

Named in honour of Queen Victoria, who was born at nearby Kensington Palace.

The old road here was Black Lion Lane, after the Black Lion Inn. Soon after Victoria came to the throne it became Queen's Road; it is said that as a child she rode horses along the lane. As that name was not very distinctive, a century later it became Queensway – and the station, opened as Queen's Road in 1900, was renamed in 1946.
