Named after Lancaster Gate, an entrance to Kensington Gardens.
The gate was named in honour of Queen Victoria as Duke of Lancaster. Until 1865 the grand terraces nearby were called Upper Hyde Park Gardens; only the square around their church was Lancaster Gate. Lancaster itself appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Loncastre: Lon for the River Lune, castre for the Roman fort on the site.
