'Sudbury' means the southern manor, south of Harrow.
The '-bury' is from the Old English for a manor house. The manor belonged to the archbishops of Canterbury; after the 14th century it was divided and leased out. Sudbury Common once stretched from Wembley to the foot of Harrow Hill.
