‘Bec’ recalls the Abbey of Bec in Normandy, given land here by the Normans.
Bec itself is named after the river there. Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Totinges. The meaning of Tooting is disputed: perhaps the people of Tota, or, from an old sense of ‘tout’, to look out, the people of a look-out post. The station opened in 1926 as Trinity Road (Tooting Bec) and was renamed in 1950.
