'Tooting' may mean the people of a man called Tota.
The meaning is disputed: it may instead come from an old sense of 'tout', to look out – the people of a look-out post on the road to London. It appears as Totinges in the Domesday Book of 1086. This part is Tooting Graveney, after the De Gravenel family, and Broadway is the generic name for the high street passing the station.
