Warwick Avenue

Westminster

Named after Jane Warwick, who married into a local landowning family.

Jane came from Warwick Hall near Carlisle and married in 1778. The land belonged to the Bishop of London, and on a street plan of 1827 his surveyor George Gutch named an old track called Green Lane after her: Warwick Road, later Warwick Avenue. Before it opened in 1915, the station was to be called Warrington Crescent.
