West Ealing

'Ealing' comes from the Gillingas, the people of a Saxon chief called Gilla.

They are named in a charter of Æthelred of Mercia from around 700; later the name appears as Yllinges around 1170 and Elyng in 1553. A hamlet called West Ealing was recorded in 1234 but later renamed Ealing Dean. The station, opened in 1871, was called Castle Hill or Castle Hill & Ealing Dean before becoming West Ealing in 1899.
