Wimbledon Park

Merton

Named after the park of Wimbledon's old manor house.

The park began as the grounds of the manor house near St Mary's Church; by the 19th century it was a home of the Earls Spencer. Capability Brown formed its lake in 1768 for the 1st Earl Spencer. In 1846 the 4th Earl sold the estate to the developer John Augustus Beaumont, who laid out new roads – Augustus Road and Beaumont Road still bear his name.
