Named after the Royal Arsenal, where weapons and ammunition were made for centuries.
The site began as a warren in the grounds of Tower Place, a Tudor house built in the 1540s, and was originally known as the Woolwich Warren. In 1805, at the suggestion of King George III, the whole complex became known as the Royal Arsenal. 'Woolwich' itself is generally believed to come from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning trading place for wool.
